The incredible story began in 1975 when rich 19-year-old Von Schedvin, who was a student in London at that time, traveled to India and met the poor but well-known portrait artist Mahanandia.
The Route he took on a bicycle!
The Indian was born in Odisha in 1949 and despite the fact that his family could not afford his studies, he managed to win a position at the College of Art in New Delhi where he practiced his talent. When the young Von Slevin met with the artist, they were delighted with each other. He was impressed with her beauty and her with its rare simplicity according to the post on Facebook. Despite the opposite opinion of their families, the couple soon married and Charlotte got the Indian name Charulata.
Few years after marriage!
In 1978, it is time for Charlotte to return to her home country and ask her husband to follow her in Europe. However, Mahanandia was in the middle of his studies and told her that he would follow her when they were completed. The couple stayed in touch by letters. They sent to each other and despite the girl’s offer to send the air tickets for the trip Mahanandia was determined to meet her with her own means. He sold his belongings and managed to save money to buy a used bike to start the fearless journey.
The Family pic after few years of getting married happily!
From New Delhi passed Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, and Denmark. It was not all rosy of course. His bicycle spoiled many on the road and had to stay without food for days. Overall, the trip lasted for four months and three weeks before finally arriving in Gothenburg, Sweden. On arrival, he had to face the immigration officials. They were surprised by his story and his dedication when he showed them the pictures of his marriage. Her parents welcomed him with open arms and 40 years later the couple is still happy and married. Dr. Mahanandia is Ambassador of India to Sweden and lives with his wife and two children there. He has been known in Sweden as an artist and Art and Culture Advisor.
