Poka Arts, an illustrator from Ghana, has decided to portray love just the way it is. He illustrates ordinary situations with ordinary people and there is a wealth of love and happiness in each picture which makes them all the more poignant.
Relationships have never been easy and probably never will be. As humans, it is only natural that we have flaws that keep us from being perfect. We are lucky when we find someone to love who loves us back, flaws and all.
Even then, it takes effort and compromise but it’s well worth it when both people in a relationship truly love each other and find happiness in making each other happy.
Unfortunately for us, we’ve all been brought up with an unrealistic idea of relationships. From fairytales to novels to movies and music, media in all its forms has helped us conjure these picture-perfect partnerships in our heads and we waste too much time and energy looking for that ideal that doesn’t actually exist.
Sometimes when we’re too busy searching, we even fail to see the people who are reaching out to us, even when they’re right under our noses.
Romance is a commodity in this day and age and companies relentlessly sell it. We get our heads turned by Rom-Coms which make us believe that love is all about the grand gestures. We end up thinking that love is real only when our significant others appear outside our windows to serenade us in the moonlight. We think it is really only when they do something extra grand to prove their love. And the moment something goes wrong, we think that’s that end of the world.
We fail to understand that love is about the little things. Love is knowing that your happiness lies in your partner’s smile. It is about being there for them whenever they need you knowing that they will do the same for you in a heartbeat. It’s about staying together through the good, the bad, and the ugly and not regretting a minute of it.
It is part of all the day to day things that make up your lives. Romance is an integral part of this but romance can be found in more ways than society lets on about. We all interpret romance differently so it is important to just do what works for you.
