Approximately 400 people per year die because their car starts sinking in water, and they cannot find a way to escape. This is a death that is definitely preventable, and this is why Geoff Fahringer decided to do something about it. Fahringer is a professional diver that has been working for years in the diving rescue team in Naples, Fla.
In order to show people how to save themselves in the unlikely case of such a circumstance, Fahringer made a video with him sinking down a canal in a car alone, and then shot the same video with several other people riding the car as well.
Gordon Giesbrecht, a researcher on the field, explained that the problem with this case is that there is not enough time for a rescuer to reach you, so you have to know how to save yourself. “We’re telling people that you have to get out of the vehicle before the water gets up against the windows, and that’s really in the first 30 to 60 seconds.”, he says. That means, don’t reach for your cell phone when you hit the water. “Don’t call 9-1-1 from inside a sinking vehicle,” he adds.
Watch this video carefully, and one day you might be thankful that you did!
