Generation gap. A little phrase that is heard throughout all these years. From every single generation. Especially the past thirty years this gap has become greater than ever. Someone might tell that it is the technology’s evolution fault, some other might say that the fault is of our parents’. What is true or false can easily been described and also written in a single article. This is what I will try to explain in this small complex of words. The generation gap of the past thirty or even a little more years.
If we try to give a clear approach to the generation gap that has been created in recent years, it would be wise to start from the games played by the previous generation in combination with today’s generation games. Let us start with some basic approach of the games and then come to the more technological approach.
Games such as Hide and Seek, Caps and Thieves, Jumping Rope, Checkers, Marbles and many more so called “street games” as long as board games have become a very good memory for many of us. If we speak for one of the previously mentioned games to a ten year old kid from this generation he might see us as an alien or even worse like time travelers. That is because today’s kids don’t have the opportunity to play out on the streets like the previous generation had. The previous generation also had some video games to play but you could only find them in stores with pinball machines and video games machines and rarely in someone’s house and that is because back then owing a video game console was a real expensive thing to have.
As the years passed the technological advance was greater than expected and this occurred to be able to create more and more “technological miracles” even for the gaming hour of our children. In today’s society it is very easy to own a computer for playing games or even a couple or two of gaming consoles. Some kids even own a whole “army” of consoles and video games. Games such as Diablo, World of Warcraft, L.O.L and many more either online either offline games have replaced the so called “old fashioned” games and offered a variety to the children. But this variety of games has replaced something more than a simple game. It has replaced the gaming hour that the previous generation shared with each other.
Nowadays we can see that the children are socially cut and without having friends outside school. This is the major difference between the two generations mentioned above. The biggest fault is of the parents and that is because in today’s society they prefer their children to be “guarded” at home rather than play out on the streets. So it is obvious that the generation gap was much more created by the combination of the technological advance and the fear that the parents have about their kids playing on the streets.
Finally if we would like to give an overall picture of the divide between generations could all be said in a single sentence? The answer is simply YES!
Don’t L(augh) O(ut) L(oud) with Hide and Seek!
