President Obama recently presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to people who are making a positive difference in the world. This included athletes, activists, and a comedian you might have heard of: Ellen DeGeneres!
Leading up the event, Ellen almost wasn’t allowed in because she forgot her ID! However, she managed to eventually persuade the security guards to let her in so she could attend the event.
When she was presented with her medal by President Obama, they both started to tear up in what was an incredibly emotional moment.
Obama spoke about the courage Ellen showed to come out more than 20 years ago and to be an inspiration to all LGBT people. Obama mentioned that it’s truly amazing how one individual can make the world more fun, loving and open-minded.
It’s a truly historic moment in history as no one has done more for LGBT people than Ellen.
Not only has she been a wonderful role model, but she has made us all laugh consistently with feel-good emotions.
And I don’t know about you, but that’s what we need more of in this world: laughing, fun, and hope!
Other honorees included Tom Hanks, Michael Jordon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Robert De Niro, Diana Ross, Bill and Melinda Gates, Lorne Michaels, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen, Cicely Tyson and Vin Scully. You can watch the tear-jerking ceremony below.
