A new hotel scam
Recently, there has been a trend of con-mans attempting to dupe people living in hotels of their money. The process is elaborate and involves a lot of planning.
Firstly, they would call you on the room telephone, and ask for your credit/debit card details because of a problem that had mysteriously cropped up while cataloging the details of the lodgers. Then, they would ask for the number on the back of your card. The CVV which they then use for their own nefarious purposes, and siphon off every last buck in your bank account.
On further investigations, it has been found that they portray themselves as hotel staff, and randomly call a room number. Even though they have been quite anonymous, there are ways to be careful of them.
Firstly, always check with the hotel staff at the reception, if there is indeed some problems with the cards that led them to a phone call. If that is not the case, then immediately lodge a complaint against the number you were called from. Always remember to act fast, without dilly-dallying for they could easily move on to their next target while you would be second-guessing your options. Also, remember to retain the phone number, and always check who you are giving the details to. Ensure that it reaches back to you safely, and check your bank account immediately thereafter.
