Half painting half sculpture, a perfect balance, chaos, and harmony. This is the “Descent”, the great creation of artist Bruce Mackley. This is an industrial mosaic with over 20,000 nails that frame and fill the meticulously painted canvas in a variety of heights and depths.
“This means it can be tiring and difficult,” says Mackley, “but offers a fantastic opportunity for changes and redefinitions”.
He says he spent hundreds of hours working diligently on this piece, adjusting and adapting the nails to get the desired result. Patience and concentration are essential for such a 3D art!
Weighing more than 158 kilos and with a height of 2 meters, the mosaic is a challenge to transfer. This is the second piece that Mackley has created. The first one presented it last year in a media art exhibition, young people loved it.
“My favorite part was some of the couples where the guy just went with the woman, possibly preferring to playing golf at the time. They walked around, they saw what i had created … and suddenly, … they could identify with the art.”
The “Descent” will be exposed in The. B.O.B. (Big Old Building) in Downtown Grand Rapids this fall, during the ArtPrize9.
