A “giant funnel” can trap and remove the plastic waste polluting the oceans. The idea belongs to a nineteen-year Dutch student who has been awarded many times and now looking for two million U.S. dollars to implement it.
Boyan Slat instead of complaining about the state of the seas which bathe the summers chose to take matters into his hands in order to clean up the oceans. Inspiration was a dip in the Greek seabed when he was on holiday in Greece three years ago. Then Bojan found that garbage was more than fish, and wondered “Why can’t we clean this up?”
Since then, followed by three years of intensive research. Millions of sea creatures die each year because of pollution of the seas. At the same time spend millions of dollars in cleaning operations beaches and seas.
After much thought and ideas that did not get the Bojan came the idea of a machine with huge funnel shape, a funnel-operated due to underwater currents. This system can be initiated in accordance with the underwater currents so as to avoid the energy consumption that it entails economic and environmental standpoint.
“Instead of wasting energy chasing garbage, enough to wait plastic trash to come to us,” explains in his website The Ocean Cleanup.
The device Slat is essentially a tubing system like buoys and extend over an area of 100 km. Under the buoys are anchored “tables” length of three meters trapping garbage.Danger exists for marine flora and fauna since the tables are large enough to trap trash, but small enough not to disturb the marine ecosystem.
After six months of testing, the Boyan presented the project «The Ocean Cleanup» at TedXDelft. That same year, the idea won the “Best Design Tool” from the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands, while the 19 year old inventor recognized by the technology company Intel as one of 20 most promising entrepreneurs of the future. On June 3 showed even the idea of New York as part of his effort to raise funds to implement it.
The Bojan inhibited studying aerospace below to set up the organization «The Ocean Cleanup» through which promotes the idea. For now “running” a campaign fundraising through the platform Indiegogo. They collected about $ 185,000 targeting two million.According to the tests carried out, the method of Bojan could clear half waste polluting the Pacific Ocean in less than a decade. For a pound of waste sufficient $ 6.21 says Bojan. Not bad.
In the video below presents the research work in the last two years and its effects:
