The stories of sexual assault of women and girls by the hand of strangers keep coming. Although this problem is much more nuanced and has deeper levels of outlook and upbringing, as well as the overall treatment of women in our society, there are some cases which ignite a flame of hope when all seems to have been lost.
Many women have been opting to learn self-defense to protect themselves in any such situation which involves one or more predators. However, just learning the basics and practicing them is not enough as long as you don’t have the patience and presence of mind to use it when in a challenging situation.
However, Priyanka Singha Roy was able to do just that when this 18-year-old was threatened by 3 much older men while out what her younger sister. The incident is from Sainthia, West Bengal in India. As is common in such situations, the three men targeted the young sisters and started bothering them with lewd comments and tried to physically block her part.
One of them grabbed her hand and this is when this young woman decided that things had gone too far. She’d been 10 months into learning martial arts and thus had the confidence to challenge their advances. When they didn’t take her seriously she proceeded to beat them up. Obviously, these ruffians had no idea about what they were getting into and paid a dear price for their heinous actions.
Witness accounts applaud the ferociousness of the youth who managed to tackle three grown men all by herself. The people who reached on the spot saw firsthand how she had out mastered the ruffians. Since then social media has been flooded with praise for this brave young girl. When a local newspaper tried contacting the girl for her comments, the only answer they got was that she was busy with her class 12th boards.

No doubt this incident is a personal victory for young Priyanka, but its importance and impact is greatly magnified when her story is told to millions of young girls. This one act of bravery by this youngster will inspire many more to take their protection into their own hands and learn some form of Martial arts.
At the same time, her composure and the ability to keep her cool while facing a dangerous situation is to be lauded too. Many adults are not able to think straight when they are in danger and yet this 18-year-old managed to beat the odds.
